Testdrift har pågått sedan 2000 och när det är klart kommer det vara ett fullskaligt internationellt och globalt positioneringssystem. Första generationen som nu är i provdrift kallas BeiDou-1 och när det är fullt utbyggt i andra generationens system kommer det kallas BeiDou-2 eller COMPASS och bestå av 35 st satelliter.
